Out in the Playground

Out in the Playground was a research and development project supported by The Kitchen, Appetite's artist development programme. Aiming to improving access to high quality theatre for families in areas with low levels of arts engagement initial research focussed on exploring the feasibility of a school playground becoming a venue for an immersive theatre event.

Through discussions and participatory workshops with staff, children and parents from two Stoke-on-Trent primary schools Out in the Playground explored possible themes and models for creating an exciting and accessible theatre event for a family audience to be sited in a primary school playground and developed playful ways of engaging a community audience.

In March 2015 Out in the Playground received Grants for the Arts funding from Arts Council England to create a bespoke installation structure and immersive theatre performance based on the ideas generated with families during the research and development period and deliver residencies in two primary schools in Stoke-on-Trent during Summer 2015.

Who works in the lost property office?

  • Someone sensible.
  • Someone who is good at listening and following rules.
  • There is a night guard. He stands on the roof and looks out for burglars.

Why might there be burglars?

  • Because the things are valuable.

Children run it.
